As a social, outgoing person I never knew that making friends could be so f’ing hard……until I became a mom…
It’s different than other chapter-of-life friends. It’s almost like high school….except in high school you are surrounded with all of these “friend options.” They are all in the exact same season of life as you are.
In the mom chapter your at home with your baby…just you, your unshowered, sleep deprived, postpartum self….and your baby. There are no “friend options” at your home just sitting there in your living room. There are no “mom dating sites.”
With a newborn we all know it’s nearly impossible to get out and meet anyone. It takes hours to get yourself and the baby ready, and as soon as you get in the car, the baby has a blow out diaper and is ready to nurse again…
Or you actually leave the house….but then the baby has a blow out diaper and is ready to nurse again….
So you’re pretty much stuck at home.
But as the baby gets older, you can take them to the park, the zoo, community holiday events, or put them ballet class, and FINALLY you’re surrounded by other toddler moms!
You first introduce yourself to Susan who says she feeds her kids organic/nonprocessed food only.
…..as your child is eating Cheetos and is begging for all of the other processed-food snacks in your bag…..
Then Tricia says she judges people by the way they dress their children.
….as you glance over at your child in hand-me-down, Cheetos-covered Carter’s….
Cindy goes on about how moms that work full time are terrible mothers.
…..as your sitting there in your scrubs from your overnight shift.
The realization hits at this point that mom life is strikingly similar to high school in more ways than just the “having friend options” way…
But then the time finally comes that you meet the mom who looks just as homeless as you…… who doesn’t judge you when your toddler smacks hers ……that says to her crying child “suck it up”…… and then makes some comment about wishing there was beer….
And then you know you found “the one.”
Good mom friends are hard to come by. But once you find them, love them hard. Love their kids hard. And enjoy the chaos together…. with beer. 🙂
