[…] “Should I freak out if they have a fever?” NO! Your child will probably have a fever. They have the stomach bug! They are sick! And that’s what happens when you get sick….you get a fever! (See my separate post on FEVER or HOW MUCH MOTRIN TO GIVE.) […]
What is my child’s Motrin dose?
Pretty much every parent gives a Motrin/Tylenol dose that is too low. And reasonably so…..because the bottle gives you the wrong dose. Which results in the fever not fully breaking, which gives parents anxiety and then they come to the ER to see me…. 🙂
Most children’s medication bottles base the dose off their age, not their weight. Or it says “if under the age of 2 ask your healthcare professional.” Both of these are not at all helpful because we do not dose off of age!
We dose medication off of weight. In kilograms. And then times it by a number we have memorized for every possible medication and then divide and then multiply……
So instead of giving you a formula that has (lots of) room for error, I made a Motrin dose calculator that does it for you. You enter your child’s weight in pounds into the calculator and it gives you how many mLs to give!
Please note this calculator is for CHILDREN’S Motrin (not infant’s Motrin).
You can now have unlimited access to this calculator that uses the exact formula that we use in the ER to calculate each child’s Motrin dose!
Just remember….don’t stress about fever. Fever is a natural response. Don’t stress about the number. 101 and 104 are both “fevers” and there isn’t a number where we panic. And as long as the temperature trends down after medicine, then it is “breaking the fever”. Trending down is what we like to see.
